Developing Tastebud

Mal used to be rather picky and choosy when it comes to food when he was a baby. He didn’t take formula, he disliked fruits and he started showing interest in what we were eating when he was very young and cooking his blend porridge was quite a waste of time as most of the time he didn’t finish what we gave him. So we let him join us at our dining table when he was very young and he would eat what we eat. Think he likes our food because it is more tasty! I would say, he developed a very clever taste bud at a tender age. He dislikes bottled food from Gerber and Heinz. We had thrown away so many bottles becos he couldn’t finish the food and these bottled food cannot be kept for long once opened. Feeding him when he was a baby was very disheartening, discouraging, tiring and frustrating!

Luckily he kinda outgrown that phase. He is much better now and he can eat pretty well nowadays. His all time favourite is MUSHROOMS. He loves different types of mushrooms, dried shitake mushrooms, fresh portabella mushrooms, canned mushrooms, golden mushrooms…he loves them ALL!!! It is weird! I wonder whether is the taste or the word ‘mushrooms’ that makes him interested?! All these mushrooms to me taste different but he loves them all.

Mal also loves soup and I think he takes after Mummy when it comes to this. Recently while drinking soup, we discovered some really weird things that Mal likes to eat…

We discovered that he likes to eat the small anchovy that we used for boiling the soup! He will use his hands and pick up all the anchovy and stuff them into his mouth! He definitely beat both us when it comes to eating anchovy. We marveled at his love for the tasteless anchovy and it almost make daddy feel ashame as daddy would normally pick out all the anchovy from the soup so that he can throw them away later!

Today, I made some herbal soup using some dried herbs. There are huai shan, yu zhu and white fungus (???). Mal ATE them ALL and insisted that we joined him saying that they taste good! These are the food that both Mummy and Daddy will considered ‘junk’ as normally we will throw them away after drinking the soup. This is the first time that he is showing so much interest for all these ‘junk’. We were astounded and amused! Mal ate something that both of us wouldn’t normally eat! For once, we were so proud of him as he eats all these healthy stuff which people would normally throw away as they are too blend.

I concluded that this little boy’s taste bud is still developing and he is still exploring and finding new food that suits his taste. This is good in a way as that means there is still hope for him to eat fruits! something that he simply refused to try till now.
