Avocado

avocado

I have never learned how to eat avocado. Firstly, it is not a common fruit in Singapore and secondly, coming from a typical asian family, nothing beats a bowl of warm fragrance white rice over stir fried dish. We need our savoury starchy staple and we like our food HOT, straight from the wok!

But things change a little recently after we came over to France. Avocado is a pretty common fruit here and is relatively cheap.  In an attempt to ‘eat healthy’,  I googled for some avocado recipe and realized that avocado is mostly used as dip, dressing and salad. Driven by desperation, I did some improvisation and came up with this VERY SIMPLE, SUPER EASY, almost BRAINLESS recipe. I swear I am never this crazy over cold raw food, except maybe for sashimi and I can’t help but to wonder why didn’t I try this when I was in the States when avocado was in abundance. It’s hard to believe that I actually enjoy eating this healthy!

Ingredient

1 avocado, skin peeled, mashed or sliced

1 can of sweet corn

pinch of salt

1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar

and all you need to do is mixed the above ingredients together.

VOILA!

You can eat this with meat dish or simply on its own as avocado is considered a complete food which is high in minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, folate and is  very filling. More on nutritional fact of avocado.

I have actually given this fruit many a chance….but I still scrap my tongue after trying a teeny wee bit of it! But I make sure my son doesn’t see me doing it!

But at 1 year, he seems to be learning to NOT like it too!

It is a cultivated taste no doubt!

The only time I eat avocado is when it is in california sushi roll or guacamole. Tried it by itself a couple of times and realise that it is in fact rather tasteless.

Have to try this recipe that you mentioned, however will probably have to finish it all by myself. No avocado fans at home…

Hi, I'm a stranger from Australia and happened to chance upon your blog while blog surfing. Avocados are really yummy in sandwiches. You could try just the typical Ham & Cheese, Turkey & Cranberry Sauce, BLTs (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomatoes), or even just have Mashed Avocados on Toast seasoned with Salt and Fresh Cracked Black pepper. Use avocado as spread instead of Butter or Margarine.

Or you could make a very easy Chicken Avocado Salad with Sliced Chicken (Boiled or roasted), Slices of Avocado, Cos lettuce leaves and a few drops of Mayo.

    Hope that helps!

try adding some olive oil (extra virgin is the best) to your salad mix. Also, I love avocadoes with tomatoes, add a little chopped spring onions (the white parts give it a good strong flavour), and mix with balsamic vinegar and olive oil (pepper and salt to taste), and it’s sooo yummy.

Also, you can make an Indonesian dessert drink by simply blending avocado with coconut milk and ice cubes. Add sugar to taste. Then melt some chocolate (or chocolate syrup) and add to the drink. It’s delicious!

Actually I wouldn’t say that avocadoes are tasteless. I find that it has a mild eggy taste. I think that’s why my 1 year old likes it – because she loves eggs too!!
