Choices

November 30, 2008

Lady lady, what do you do ?

She is a wife, she is a mother

A domestic queen for the household

She scrubs, she washes

She cooks, she sews

like her predecessors eons ago

where home was where she was bound

for society defined her role

Child rearing was her task

and traditional homemaker was her role

equality between sexes was unknown

feminism was alien

Hundreds years from then

Qualifications no longer crippled her

Rights and opportunities lay bountiful ahead

thanks to many who fought before her

a battle to seek for justice

and the end of sexism

But to some a new battle has just begun

To seek re-affirmation

To re-find her role

To reap the rewards of the battle fought

Yet to others the reward to reap

is but the freedom of choice

Period.

the choice to seek her dream

the choice to live her being

the choice to reassume her predecessors’ role

Choices worthy of her heart and soul

Gingerbread Man

November 27, 2008

Malcolm woke up with a cough, runny nose and slight fever and was given the day off.

He ate, played and napped. It was hard to tell that he was sick. I guess not having to go school automatically makes him feel better.

We read loads of stories.

His recent favourite from the library is The Gingerbread Man. We found an excellent edition of this old tale. He loves it and so do I.

This is the 2nd time we borrowed this book, after hogging it for 2 months the last time.

The book came with a Recipe for the Gingerbread Man at the back cover.

He wants to make his own gingerbread man, hoping that his gingerbread man will jump out as well.

And of course, anything for my sick boy today.

Nov 622

Checked the fridge and found out that I ran out of butter.

I don’t have molasses, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground clovers, ground allspice.

Not worth to splurge when I only need to use 1 teaspoon each.

I miss home where I have EVERYTHING for baking.

think…think…think…

Maybe we could make Gingerbread Man PANCAKE instead ??

I have been trying to find the perfect pancake recipe, maybe something close to MacDonald’s, as Mal loves them so much.

But how to shape the pancake ?

think…think…think…

Nov 591

An Aluminium Foil Gingerbread Man Mould!

We even came up with a shark one.

And after a long time fiddling and meddling in the kitchen.

We FINALLY have our very own Gingerbread Man

Nov 603

We managed to make 1 decent looking gingerbread man, 1 mess up gingerbread man and 1 weird looking shark.

It was hell lot of work, it was messy.

The aluminium foil mould wasn’t a good idea.

The Only Consolation

We had fun together and my sick boy was happy

Lesson Learned

Necessity is the Mother of All Inventions (at least for this time)

Here’s the recipe for the pancake

Ingredients

I cup self raising flour

2 tablespoons castor sugar (optional)

1 egg, beaten lightly

180ml of milk

butter for cooking (I used olive oil instead since I run out of butter)

Method

- Mix flour and sugar

- Mix in egg and milk, to make a smooth batter.

- Add a bit of butter to lightly coat a hot pan. Pour dessert-spoons of pancake mixture onto the pan.

- Wait for bubbles to appear on the surface of the pancake, flip.

- Serve hot with jam and honey.

Wednesday

November 26, 2008

Wednesday has become our F.A.V.O.U.R.I.T.E day of the week.

For Malcolm, it is the day that he gets to meet his favourite librarians, flaunt his language skill, listen to loads of stories, sing and forget about parlez français.

For me, I get an hour of pure bookish time, burying myself in books. Worn, torn, tattered, out of published. I have a fetish for old books and I can’t be happier when I get to bring back these really old books, totally FOC from the free book section. It is like hitting the jackpot, discovering the richest shipwreck!

And each time I seem to lug back more than I could finish. Simultaneously juggling 4 books at a time ?!

I am anxious, I am eager, I am thrilled and I am afraid that a lifetime is not going to be enough.

Chili Crab

November 23, 2008

My husband surprised us with THIS for dinner over the weekend.

Nov 418

YES it is CHILI CRAB!!!

oooh I miss chili crab from back home and I NEVER NEVER expected this!

Not when I don’t have my Prima Deli premix with me!

And to have these served in our cozy nest, on a cold rainy night, with French baguette.

It was Heaven !

It was Sweeet …

and Hot and Spicy !

Is there something sexy about a man who cooks ? Or is it just me ??

For those who are as desperate as us, here’s where my sexy man got his inspiration.

(Note : the tricky part is not the cooking but the cleaning of the crab!)

Here’s How to clean the crab

Recipe for Chili Crab (moderated for ~ 2kg of live crabs)

Ingredients :

live crabs (~2.0 kg)

4 tsp vegetable oil

3 tsp garlic, finely minced

2 tsp ginger, finely grated

1 egg

salt and pepper

Chlli Sauce - Combine

4 - 5 tsp chilli paste (we used their sambal olek which is the only decent chili paste that we can find overseas, both in the States and Paris)

2 tbsp cup tomato ketchup

2 tsp sugar

2 tsp lemon juice  or rice vinegar

1 tsp dark soy sauce

1 tsp cornstarch

1 cup water

Method :

- In a bowl combine chili sauce ingredients , mix well

- Heat vegetable oil in a hot work, add garlic, ginger and chili paste

- Add combined chili sauce ingredients to wok

- Bring sauce to a boil, add salt and pepper to taste

- Toss in crabs, stir-fry to coat with the sauce

- Cover and cook crabs over med-high heat until turn red in colour

- Lift cover from time to time to give it a good stir, add water if necessary

- When crabs are fully cooked, remove them from wok

- Break an egg into the sauce, stirring gently

- Mix in the crabs

- Serve with French baguette to dip into the yummy sauce

Sequin Skirt

November 22, 2008

Nov 378

I wore this skirt to a dinner last night. Chiffon sequin skirt that offers ZERO insulation on a cold windy night at 7 degree Celsius.

My calves were kept warm by my boots but I was quite sure my butt and thighs got quite frozen by the time we reached our destination.

The price to pay for vanity.

Also for the sake of wearing a skirt for the FIRST TIME in Paris.

How pathetic !

Making Friends (at the Playground) Part 2

November 20, 2008

I wrote about Malcolm’s strategy at the playground more than a month ago. It worked for a while, he made friends and  his friends played with him at the playground. But recently, after the 2 weeks break from school, things seem to revert back to where it begins.

The other day, he got so upset when I picked him up for lunch. He told me, while choking back tears that he didn’t want to go back school because no one plays with him at the playground.

He tried walking around groups of children, hoping that they will invite him to join in. He was afraid to approach or request to join in, firstly he is still not comfortable with the language and secondly, he was afraid of being pushed by kids who didn’t welcome him. We knew he tried  his best.

His problem is specifically at the playground, he can tell us he has no problem in the classroom. He enjoys singing and he enjoys going to the gym but not having anyone to play with at the playground is enough to ruin his day. It is like a devil’s place for him and it pains us to see that he is having such a hard time on this foreign land.

Nov 353

After much talking, listening and brainstorming,  he insisted that he does not want to play with the boys who play fighting, we came up with a few solutions for him to handle the playground situation

1. Approach kids whom were nice to him in the classroom.

2. Approach kids who are alone or playing in small group of 2, bigger groups are usually more difficult to get in.

3. Learn to fold paper planes so that he can throw them at the playground and hopefully attract kids to join in.

If all fail, he can take out his 2 little pin planes we put in his pocket and play with them.

We are having our fingers crossed and hoping that things will get better.

New Life

November 18, 2008

As if to compensate for the loss of Nina, we decided to put some new ‘life’ into our home.

We grabbed 2 empty jam jars, lined it with some cotton pads, sprinkled some beans, give it plenty of water and leave it near the window. We used soya beans as we only have that in our pantry.

I warned Mal that probably NOTHING will happen.

Firstly, I have only heard about growing green beans to get bean sprouts, never soya beans. Secondly, I thought the weather was too cold to grow anything. All plants are busy shedding now, it is not the time for new life.

But how wrong was I !

Miraculously, within a few days, little seedlings began to sprout!

We were surprised and Mal was so happy. It was as if these little soya beans were defying natural forces.

‘I will grow despite the cold, I will grow despite little sun shine!’

Then we worried again when we had to go for our trips.

We fed them water and gathered the jars under a table lamp. That will be their source of light for the next 1 week.

After a week, we were greeted by these at the entrance.

Be Kind

November 17, 2008

Will there be love when there is no hate

Will you know friend when you have never met foe

Can you feel smart if no one is stupid

Can you appreciate sincerity when you have never seen hypocrisy

Will there be right when there is no wrong

Will you see light when you have never been in darkness

Can you define order when there is no chaos

Is there peace when there is no war

Will there be good when there is no evil

Ignorance may be the root of all evil

Yet one knowingly does evil

for free will may have its place in human nature

To err is human

Embrace and not isolate

Appreciate and not despise

For self righteousness, contemptuousness and superiority

is but, built upon others’ imperfection, insufficiency

or mere divergence

Seek within for greater truth

For that is where peace resides

Be gracious

Be kind

Nina

November 12, 2008

A few weeks ago, I was told that Mal’s pet fish in Singapore, Nina had died. (post related to Nina) Nina is a male fighting fish with beautiful rainbow coloured tail. It was a gift from my sis. It was Mal’s first pet.

My sister suggested that we should keep the news from him. My parents told everyone not to breath a word.  They will replace the fish and Mal will not suspect a thing. Nina will still be alive and everyone will be happy.

Everybody in my family worried about how Mal will react to the news. They had all seen how he turned weepy and teary over his drifted away water bottle and over a wild beetle.

Tell him that you feel sad or if somewhere hurts, he will give you the most sympathizing look and console you in his sweetest voice,

‘Don’t be sad’

‘Don’t think about it, it will be ok’

YES, he is very sweet and sensitive towards people he loves and trusts. I have a SNAG in my house.

I felt sort of silly to let everyone go through the hassle just to keep Mal happy. Spared from the truth and shielded from the reality.

Life is not a bed of roses and I guess it was time we explain death to him.

I wasn’t sure how to do it, I worried about his reaction.

During one of the evening, after dinner, when there was no school the next day, when his mood was good and the sea was calm, I broke the news.

I was expecting him to burst into tears, but he did not, he just asked ‘WHY’

So I told him the lump that was growing near Nina’s gills might have caused him to be very sick and when one gets very sick, one might die.

and I went on telling him

‘Anything that breath and living will eventually die one day as they grow old or when they get very very sick.

Plants, animals, people. That is why it is important to eat lots of vegetable, drink lots of water, keep the body healthy so that we will not fall sick because when we fall very very sick, sometimes even the doctor cannot help us.

When things die, we usually bury them in the ground.

We will dig a hole, put them in the hole and cover them up with soil.’

With this, he asked

‘Did yeeyee bury Nina ?’

I was quick to blurt out a ‘Yes’ not very truthful though as my sis probably had dump it into the garbage bin.

As if it was not clear enough, I continued,

‘When dead things are mixed with the soil, they will rot and decay and become good nutrients for the soil.

Plants will use this good nutrients to help them grow.

When things die, we will no longer see them but we can always remember them in our hearts and we can still look at their pictures.”

Hearing that, he broke his silence to ask for a picture of Nina and I was SO GLAD I HAVE ONE.

may 174

With that, he sat quietly on my lap, looking at the picture for a long long time.

I was sure his eyes were teary but this time he didn’t bawl and I was glad I did not have to explain further.

Re Visit Le Mont Saint Michel

November 11, 2008

My 4 year old has caught the travel bug. An initial plan to laze and hibernate in Paris over the long weekend, turned out to be an impromptu 3 day trip to revisit Le Mont Saint Michel and the beach in the north western region of France, after succumbing to his plea. He was eager to climb atop the rocky tidal island and to catch sight of the changing landscape brought about by the tidal change.

This time round, we managed to tour the abbey and see much more but I think Malcolm enjoys it more and appreciates better, waddling on nearby marshy lands and observing the tidal change which miraculously engulfs and reveals the surrounding land.

Here’s sharing some of the pictures we took.
