At 34 Weeks

September 29, 2009

At 34 weeks I am finally feeling the strain of carrying a 10 kg load. Yes, I am still at my 10 kg mark, somehow, my weight hasn’t been increasing much at this final trimester. Perhaps due to the low sugar, low carbo, low fat diet that I am sticking to, a conscious effort to keep my blood sugar level within acceptable range.

I can’t walk as fast and I can’t walk as far. I feel heavy and my legs ache. In fact, I have to plan ahead the places I want to go.  I avoid places where a lot of walking is required. Now, that is totally unlike me, as I go places even when I am pregnant because many times, I FORGOT that I am one until someone will to frown and remind me how PREGNANT I am! Being in the pool is about the only time that makes me feel normal, a relief from the extra weight.

Just a couple of weeks ago,  we had a girls’ night out. Just the wifeys and mummies with the daddies at home baby sitting the kids. It was a crazy night with food and juice, music and dancing. And YES, I danced, though I did feel a bit out of place with my protruding tummy in a jam packed pub. We called that a little celebration before the baby pops.

That was about 2 weeks ago.

Today, I think twice even when going to town. For now, my body is my MASTER and I am OBEYING my master’s plea for me to SLOW DOWN

I have been having Braxton Hicks contractions. I don’t remember experiencing such intense false contractions when I had Malcolm and the advice given to me was to REST. The baby however doesn’t seem to want to cooperate. He kicks, moves and turns causing uncomfortable tightness all round my tummy even when I am resting. I told my husband perhaps this baby will take after his size, an 8 pounder compared to Malcolm who was barely 6.5 when he was born, thus explains the intensity and frequency of the baby’s movement. The baby NEEDS space and room which is probably scarce with my petite frame.

Apart from preparing for the arrival of the new baby, my husband and I have been getting quite a bit of couple time these days with Malcolm volunteering to go over to my sister’s place. Reason being, he gets to indulge in almost endless computer games.

We would go for dinner, coffee and then indulge in conversation for hours. We talk about everything and anything and to think that I have known this man for 20 years, it is simply amazing. I am certainly not complaining as I know in about a month’s time, our conversation will probably revolve round the new baby.

Recycled Piggy Bank

September 28, 2009

We were at this shop with his little friends the other day
He saw them each bought a piggy bank
He wanted one too
but I told him perhaps we could make one ourselves
one with a little more character and cost a little less

We rummaged through our ever growing collection of scraps
We gathered these

and we made a piggy bank, from our pile of recyclable junk

An Army Tank Bank
where he can drop coins from the top
and pop them out from the side
an opening with a blue cap
where his Meiji milk used to flow

And it wasn’t just any tank
It was a FV 101 Scopion from the British Army’s reconnaissance units
one used in the Gulf War

I was clueless how a reconnaissance tank should look
so he instructed me to refer to his book

He was particular about how each part should be
the position of the turret
the length of the gun
and the colour has to be like those used in Operation Desert Storm

It’s fun piecing up what he WANTS from what we HAVE
and I love to hear him goes
‘AH! I have an IDEA!’

When we were finally done
the tank probably looks different from the actual one
with his own specification and improvisation
but he was ecstatic
and he was exhilarated

He LOVES how his reconnaissance tank looks
and I LOVE what follows next

That I can now nag less
for he has incentives to do his daily things
as he was eager to earn his keep
to fill up his Army Tank Bank

And he LOVES his tank/bank so much
that he had to bring his precious creation to the airport to welcome Dad

Setting Up

September 26, 2009

We saw his eyes blink
We saw his mouth move
Then we saw him point his index finger

And we thought to oursevles
Is he trying to tell us something ?

And we realised that it isn’t long before we get to meet this little guy

So we went home
and set up his bed

Blogging Dad & WE ARE OVER the 1000 MARK !

September 24, 2009

And the truth is
there is only a handful of blogging dads that I know
I am not sure why but the blogosphere seems to be flooded and dominated by mummy bloggers
Perhaps Dads have to be the ones of few words
Maybe it ain’t macho for Dads to be fussing over the nitty gritty details of kids and family life

And I tend to see blogging Dads as a sensitive bunch
the much-sought-after SNAGs which today’s women are looking for

Here’s one whom I met through Project Happy Feet
He blogs
He’s a dad for 4 (Age 4 mths to 6 year old)
a very charitable one
and he and his wife manage work and 4 kids WITHOUT a helper !

NOW
that IS a challenge
and I know there is hell lot for me to learn from these people !

More toys have been updated for Project Happy Feet
And we have passed the 1000 mark !

The fund raising effort will continue till 30 Sept 2009
Do drop me an email haifangsee[at]gmail[dot]com if you have more toys to contribute

Pens Sold Out

September 23, 2009

And we have SOLD all the pens !
within a couple of days

My initial worries of not being able to sell them
was unfounded

All because we thought that
NOT EVERYONE has an affection for a yellow sea sponge with a toothless grin
Malcolm’s just one of them
It’s his LEAST favourite cartoon character
In fact it FREAKS him out
and IRRITATES him big time
which explains his nonchalence
when he first saw those pens
didn’t impress him even if they were Lego’s creation

But the response has been overwhelming
orders are still coming in
and we have to turn them down

To date, we are nearing the double mark of our initial target
we are at SGD 945

We are getting the 2nd batch of items for the home
which includes table tennis bats, ping pong balls, shuttle cocks and street soccer balls

The fund raising effort will continue till 30 Sept
I am still taking in toys and you can read here if you wish to contribute
Check out our remaining toys for sales

Inactivity

September 21, 2009

Somehow when Dad is not around
I felt obligated to shower him with all my attention

I let him share my bed
Even though he has long learn to sleep on his own
He sleeps better when next to me
and we woke up later than usual

We had pancakes for brunch
wholesome homemade ones

Perhaps it was the running around
Mum felt extremely tired
perhaps Dad was not around
Mum felt especially lazy

Somehow the sun seem hotter than usual
the glare almost unbearable

So we drew the curtain
cooled the room
and sprawled in bed for a game of scrabble

I love the way he focus on each letter
trying to form his words
flipping through dad’s reference books on planes
our substitute for a dictionary
for we couldn’t find one at home

Juggling numbers in his head
trying to add up his score
a good workout and simple nourishment for his little brain

Then we filled up the tub
dribble a drop or two of bath drop
threw in some toys
he entertained himself
while I soaked my aches and sores away

And then came the message
‘I’ve landed in Zurich’

It has only been slightly more than 12 hours
but we miss him already

And I thought about our little house with the little red shutters
perched at the edge of the slope
and I wonder is it too early to catch the first snow

Go West

September 19, 2009

And we made it to the frog and the goat farms

in the west part of the island during the recent school holiday

About a dozen kids and half a dozen of regular mums behind wheels

It feels like the good old days

where driving for an hour or 2 was a norm

During days when the men were away

Finding entertainment for ourselves

IS mandatory to save our sanity

the 4 letter words

S.A.L.E

was our best motivation

this time round

the motivation was somewhat healthier

to explore the rural

to bask in nature

to nourish the young minds

and discover what else this concrete jungle has to offer

It was a good get together

Gain

September 17, 2009

And for the past one week
I was heartened by the sincerity of the people around me
and touched by friends who have showed their support

Friends whom I have not met for decades
Friends from the  blogosphere
whom I only know through their blogs

I talked to them for the first time
I met them in person for the first time

I even met up a mummy who bought baby slings from me eons ago
She was the first mummy blogger I knew
Her blog about her little boy was the first mummy blog I read
Her blog inspired me
and got me started writing 4 years ago

And then there were people whom are total strangers
who came forward to contribute
unconditionally, unsuspiciously and totally giving

It has only been slightly more than a week
and I know that
even if we fail to raise the targeted amount
even if we end up paying from our own pockets
It is okay
for we’ve already gained so much

For
Life’s biggest regret
is perhaps not about failing
but rather
it’s about not trying

At least we tried

And we have already passed our initial target amount of SGD 500

Thank You

Pens that Connect and Build

September 15, 2009

I was pleasantly surprised and deeply touched when a mummy from Hong Kong, who found out about Project Happy Feet through a mutual friend, decided to do everything she could, to contribute.

These are just one of her contributions …

PENS !!!
and they are not just any pen
but The Only Pen You Connect and Build
by Lego

She has contributed 90 of these colourful and unique SpongeBob Pen, totally BRAND NEW, so that we can sell them and raise fund for the children.

I have added these pens to the list of toys for sales and they will be priced at SGD 5 each except for a handful of limited design which will be priced at around SGD 8.

These colourful unique pens will make good children’s party gifts and collectible items. So you may want to consider getting a few boxes of these if you are planning for a birthday party.

I am selling them individually or in boxes of 6 and will deliver them using local post service.  Buyers will have to pay for the delivery charge which should cost around SGD 1 to 2.

Currently some of my friends and family are helping to sell these pens and the response has been rather encouraging. Let me know if you are interested in helping to sell them to your friends.

I spent yesterday making cards to tag to these pens. These are thank you cards explaining Project Happy Feet and I thought they turned out pretty neat and I actually enjoy making them!

Other than these pens, I have also put up toys contributed by Leonny and other mummies.
So come on over to see whether you can find anything that fancy you and your little one.

We Watched

September 13, 2009

The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Grabbed the pair of complimentary tickets from a friend at the very last minute
On the very same morning, 15 minutes before the show starts !

Sped to destination, still 10 minutes late
It was our first play EVER EVER

He didn’t know what to expect
Neither did I

Love the cheerful and colourful stage
The kids were very spontaneous and responsive

The songs were very catchy
and we just couldn’t stop singing
even after the show ended
[Who's afraid of
the big bad wolf
the big bad wolf
the big bad wolf] X 2
Tra la la la la

He enjoyed thoroughly
and can’t wait for the next play
So do I

At the end of the play,
He did learn that Boys Should Not Tell Lies
and I secretly wished that he isn’t smart enough to catch the WHYs

that Dad should not be giving his child empty promises
that Dad should be spending more time with his child
that Dad should reflect before reprimanding his child
that the lying was only a symptom, a sign
that he isn’t giving his child enough attention
and Dad should learn to listen

Overall,
an enjoyable play
and a good way to start the morning
though I think I would rename the play as
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
and The Dad Who Never Listen

Toy Contributions

September 12, 2009

It made me really happy to know that there are parents out there who wish to join me in  Project Happy Feet by contributing their toys.

And it doesn’t need to be a long list of toys. It doesn’t even need to be a brand new toy.

All parents need to do is to let the children choose 1 or 2 toys they don’t play anymore, explain to them how they can make someone happy by contributing their toys.

Let them participate in the process of giving, from cleaning the toy to handing over the toys to collecting the money.

Explain to them how the money they received in exchange for their toys can help to improve someone’s life.

If you are interested in joining me in Project Happy Feet by contributing your children’s toys,
I will need you to

- email pictures of the toys to haifangsee[at]gmail[dot]com
- provide the name of the toys and if possible, with description of the item.
- state the price you wish to sell (if you have preference)
- the address for the item to be picked up

I will put up the item at Toys for Happy Feet and will inform interested buyer to contact you directly to arrange the toy to be picked up or delivered.

And I hope that through this, children will learn to treasure what they have more and learn that They Are Happy When They Make Someone Else Happy !

Note : I will be accepting toy contributions till end of this week 20 Sept 2009. We are targeting to deliver the items to the home on 1 Oct Children’s Day

Giving

September 9, 2009

I snapped this picture of him cleaning his Old MacDonald Farm House diligently before heading to bed.
We were supposed to deliver this toy the next day for Project Happy Feet

As I watched him, I realised …

Me, I am just a facilitator
Him, he is the one facing the brunt of parting with his beloved toys

and I know …
I may never be like him

and I am glowing with pride and admiration for my little guy

More toys have been uploaded for Project Happy Feet, do check them out here.

Note : I have received emails from readers and friends who wish to help by contributing their toys. If you plan to do so, please email me, haifangsee [at] gmail [dot] com, so that I can provide you the details on how we can do so. Thank you.

Is This What You See ?

September 8, 2009

This is how my site looks on my computer and how it should look when viewed with most browsers, I supposed.
Thanks to Leonny, I was told that when my site was viewed with Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP,  the 2 right hand columns of  this site DISAPPEAR totally !
And I am wondering whether you have been reading my blog WITHOUT the right hand columns all this while.
Do drop me a note or send me an email haifangsee[at]gmail[dot]com if that’s the case and I will have to find a way to fix it!

THANKS HEAPS!

Conditiion : Gently Used
Price : SGD 20 (retail price : USD 29) SOLD
Item Description : Nourished exclusively on music (although, like all of us, it appreciates a little positive attention), the palm-sized iDog moves and grooves to the rhythm of your musical beat. For a robotic canine, the iDog is remarkably expressive, employing an entertaining assortment of flashing lights, head tilts, ear lifts, and even growls (should you flick its tail). Plug it into a portable music device with the included dual connector cable, and watch it respond while the built-in speaker plays along. All dogs like to be off the leash, however, so iDog can go wireless, too–simply place it next to a speaker, or take it anywhere music is playing. With such winning design, even those skeptical of robotic toys may find themselves giving it a pat on the head to reward it for rocking well done, or pressing its nose to let the pup take a nap. Multicolored lights, sounds, and movements, along with a “personality” programmed by your continued musical input, keep the iDog fun and interesting.
