We delivered the items for Happy Feet Project to Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home last Saturday
It was Malcolm’s first visit to a children’s home
Someone from the home was kind enough to show us around
For the first time
he caught a glimpse of how life is like for children in the home
Setting off
Our car was packed to the brim with items for the home

Our destination
Right at the end of Serangoon Garden Way

Upon reaching
Malcolm was already sleeping
A late night sleep coupled with hot and humid weather made him especially tired that day

In the dormitory
a simple bed and a small cupboard for each child

Bunk bed
one of the bed in the girls’ dormitory

Shoes
in the pigeon holes outside the dorm

Toys
Sunning on the rooftop

A little token from the Home
A bag of bugs and a box of stationary

Driving Off

Do not stand on a high pedestal
take 5 cents in your hand and say,
“here, my poor man”
But be grateful that the poor man is there
so by making a gift to him
you are able to help yourself
It is not the receiver that is blessed
but the giver
Be thankful that you are allowed to exercise your power of benevolence and mercy in the world
adapted from quote by Swami Vivekananda

Cool! You even print a T-shirt for your son. Can we do it again next year?
After the NKF saga, honestly I dont trust donating money, in-find is more “safe” to give.
Rachel : hey sunflower, it will be great to do it again! maybe we don’t have to wait till next year. Your support has been a great encouragement !
ops, typo should be in-kind
I am very touched reading this post and looking at the pics. Your last quote is exceptionally powerful.
Rachel : hey Nic, thanks for your comment. I hope u enjoy the quote. It’s amazing, like many things, someone who came before us, have thought about it
Kudos to you and Malcolm for this great effort!
BTW, where do you get the car seat in the pic? I’ve always wanted to buy one that can support the head, cos’ Xuan always fall asleep in the car and her head would sway to the left and right throughout the journey
Rachel : hey Tin, thanks for your comment. It is a maxi cosi booster seat…the back can be removed when the child gets bigger.
Mal is very particular abt his car seat. He chose this himself and LOVE IT cos it is so comfy.
I think for a 5 year old, they still need the back and I esp love the head support at the side, like u said, without that, the kids will crouch into a very uncomfortable position when sleeping.
Another good thing abt this car seat is it comes with a slip thru holder for the seat belt so that it doesn’t cut into the child’s neck when they buckle the seat belt
We bought it at a discount Suntec City and it cost much less than a Britax one, which was what we planned to get initially. A very good buy
I’m touched by the photos and what you’ve written. It’s truly the giver who’s more blessed than the receiver. And I like the T-shirt! Cool.
wanted to print one for myself but I was too pregnant to fit into one.
Rachel : hi Ing, thanks for your comment. I printed the T-shirt for Mal and thought it was pretty neat too
*clap clap clap*
and thanks for your generous contribution.
Outstanding job Rachel!
And my oh my! You had even printed the the Project Happy Feet T-Shirt!!!
Rachel : hey ya..love the t-shirt too
Thanks for sharing the day with us, Rachel … I’m not there but I feel as if I’m already there and part of the whole giving too …
Thanks for organising it all … and yup, sure will participate again if you plan to organise another one!
Rachel : hey Leonny, thanks and you are most welcome. It’s been greating meeting up with you.
Indeed, it is a blessing in itself to be able to give to these children! Wonderfully done Rachel, this is one of the best lessons in altruism that u have imparted to Mal.
Rachel : hey rachel thanks. He may be too young now but I hope that one day he will read this bllog and remember what we want him to learn and the values we want to instill in him
